As my readers will know, when completing a Form I-9, an employer must physically inspect the identity and work authorization documents provided by the new hire to assess whether they appear to be genuine and relate to the worker presenting them. With the advent of Covid-19, the Department of Homeland Security granted employers the flexibility to inspect those documents virtually.
Effective July 31, 2023, that flexibility expires. That means that employers must physically inspect the previously virtually inspected documents on or before August 30, 2023.
